Father's Day

My dad was a pastor too. In many ways, that defined him—it was who he was. “Pastor Laesch.” But to me he was just “dad.” As we move toward Father’s Day my thoughts turn often to him.

When I was a child he took care of me (and took me to task once in a while!). He helped me grow and mature and taught me what it was to be a man. He shared with me his love for the Cubs (blame him, Cards fans!). But he especially shared with me his love for the Savior. He made sure I knew Jesus! I know he wasn’t perfect. We are all sinners. But I really looked up to him. My dad was my hero.

As I got older our relationship changed as those relationships do. He was still my hero —but he was also my mentor. I wanted him to be proud of me. His opinion mattered so much. He was so very wise and seemed always to have the right answer. Many times I wish we could sit down over coffee and talk. I do miss him. He’s been in heaven with Jesus for over 11 years now.

From people who knew us both, sometimes they say to me, “You’re a chip off the old block... The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” I believe they’re exaggerating—but even so, it makes me feel good. What a compliment! I like to think that I am like my dad—even maybe just a little bit.

As we move toward Father’s Day, I think about my other Father too—my heavenly Father. He has taken care of me (and takes me to task once in a while!). He has helped me grow and mature and taught me what it means to be a godly man. He has shown me Jesus and what it means to be His disciple. He is my hero. He is my mentor. I want Him to be proud of me too.

I wonder if I am in any way like Him. Can I give as He gives? Can I care as He cares? Can I love as He loves? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if someone who knows us both would say, “You’re a chip off the old block... The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” What a compliment that would be! Is it at all possible that there is some resemblance between us— even maybe just a little bit? What a fantastic idea! I pray it is so for me—and for you.

Happy Father’s Day, Father!

Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when He appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.
- 1 John 3:2
