Lutheran Malaria Initiative

Did you know that a child dies from malaria every 60 seconds?

Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by a parasite, transmitted from person to person by the bite of a mosquito. According to the World Health Organization, there are more than 200 million cases of malaria each year and of those infected, nearly three-quarter million die. While mosquitoes bite everyone, children, pregnant women and their unborn babies are most vulnerable because of their weakened or insufficient immune systems. In many parts of Africa, malaria remains the leading cause of death for children under the age of five. The disease takes the life of a child every 60 seconds.*

How can you help?

One of our mission emphases for 2013 is the Lutheran Malaria Initiative (LMI), a partnership of Lutheran World Relief and the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod and part of a global focus to help end malaria deaths in Africa by 2015. 100 percent of every donation to LMI will help to combat malaria in Africa. To learn more about malaria and LMI, watch the video below and visit the LMI website at www.lutheranmalaria.org. If you'd like to make a donation to LMI, please click the button below to visit Chapel's fundraising page.

Chapel members Eric and Linda Funke, missionaries to Tanzania, have had first-hand experience with malaria. Linda was diagnosed with malaria on the Sunday before Christmas 2012 and ended up in the hospital several days later to receive IV fluids and antibiotics. To read more about the Funkes' experiences in Tanzania, including Linda's battle with malaria, visit their blog at http://afunketimeintanzania.blogspot.com.
